From The President

As you may know, there is a campaign to close the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to all ORV's.  Below you will find an update about the dire situation and what you can do to help from Garry Oliver.  I urge all members to inform themselves and do what they can.

This winter has been one of the worst I can remember in a long time.  But spring is finally here and soon we will be fishing again here on the Outer Banks.  As you can see from our calendar all dates are set for our activities, and I urge of of our members to help where ever they can to make 2010 the best year ever for our club.

                                                                                                 Sincerely,

                                                                                                 Pat Cahill, President

There is a campaign to close the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Recreational Seashore to all ORV's.  This movement is being lead by the Friends of Wildlife, the National Audubon Society and the Southern Environmental Law Center.  In 2008 they were able to convince a judge that the National Park Service was not doing its job in protecting the wildlife in the seashore.  The judge entered a decree which in effect took control from the Park Service.

The results were devastating, many of the most popular areas were closed including Cape Hatteras, the economy suffered, a nighttime ban was put in place and we the people were helpless to do anything about it.

We now have the opportunity to make a difference.  The judge ordered that a plan for the beach be implemented by April 1, 2011.  The plan has been released and a public comment period has begun and will be open until May 11, 2010.  They have also announced that several public hearings will be held iin the near future.  The dates are not yet available.

I can't stress enough how important it is that we get involved.  The time has come, the time is now, the future of driving our beaches is at stake.  I urge you to go to the following websites for more information on the issues and what you can do to help.
